Segun out to make the fans proud
After a 12-week pre-season, Saracens return to XVs action this weekend when they take on Wasps in the Premiership Rugby Cup.
The two sides met last weekend in the Premiership 7s with Sarries coming out on top in the final to claim the title for the second season running.
A number of youngsters impressed at the tournament including winger Rotimi Segun and the 22-year-old identified his side’s willingness to work hard for one another as a reason for their success.
Segun has made 12 appearances for Saracens.
“To win the 7s in the way we did was a great feeling,” he said.
“We showed really togetherness and resilience throughout both days, particularly in the semi-final against Exeter. To nil any side is an achievement in itself and that’s testament to everyone’s defensive efforts and determination to do well for each other.
“Hopefully we can take that into the XVs format.”
Saracens reached the final of the Premiership Rugby Cup last season, using the competition for youngsters to show their worth in a senior environment.
They certainly stepped up to the mark and Segun is relishing the chance to express himself once again alongside his teammates.
He said: “It’s often said that the Prem Cup is an opportunity for the younger players to show what they’re capable of and it really is.
“Last season a lot of the lads put their hands up with their performances and we did extremely well to get the final. We have a four-week block in this tournament which will hopefully stand us in good stead ahead of the Premiership season.
“It’s been a long pre-season and a lot of hard work has gone into preparing us for this opening match. The boys can’t wait to get out there.
“There are 15 players on international duty so while they’re away it’s up to us to perform well not only for ourselves but to make the club and fans proud.”
